John 19:2

Listen to this article

And the souldiers platted a crowne of thornes, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, John 19:2 (KJV)

Context: The verse is part of the narrative of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. Jesus has been handed over to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, by the Jewish religious authorities. Pilate attempts to find a way to release Jesus, but eventually gives in to the demands of the crowd and orders his crucifixion.

Soldiers’ Mockery: In this verse, it describes the soldiers who took charge of Jesus and subjected Him to cruel treatment. They mockingly crown Him with a crown of thorns, symbolizing the mockery and derision they have for His claim to be the King of the Jews. They also put a purple robe on Him, likely intended as a parody of royal attire.

Symbolism: The crown of thorns and the purple robe carry deep symbolic significance. The crown of thorns represents the suffering and mockery that Jesus endured. It foreshadows the pain He would soon experience on the cross, where thorns would also be pressed into His scalp. The purple robe symbolizes the mockery of His claim to kingship, as purple was a colour associated with royalty.

Fulfillment of Prophecy: The actions of the soldiers in placing the crown of thorns and the purple robe on Jesus fulfill prophecies spoken of Him centuries before. For example, Isaiah 50:6 says, “I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.” This prophecy speaks to the humiliation and suffering Jesus would face, including the crown of thorns.

Theological Implications: The events described in John 19:2 highlight the sacrificial nature of Jesus’ mission. Despite being the Son of God, Jesus willingly endured humiliation and suffering for the sake of humanity. The crown of thorns and the purple robe represent the depth of His love and His willingness to bear our sins on the cross.

Remember that a thorough Bible study involves exploring the surrounding verses, considering the historical and cultural context, consulting other biblical passages, and studying various interpretations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text.
