John 21:3
Simon Peter saith vnto them, I goe a fishing. They say vnto him, Wee also goe with thee. They went foorth and entred into a ship immediatly, and that night they caught nothing. John 21:3 (KJV)
This verse occurs in the Gospel of John after Jesus’ resurrection. Simon Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, declares his intention to go fishing. The other disciples agree to join him. They set out in a boat that night but caught nothing. Prior to Jesus’ crucifixion, Peter had denied Jesus three times, as Jesus had foretold. Following Jesus’ resurrection, Peter might have been dealing with feelings of guilt and uncertainty about his role as a disciple. Therefore, Peter’s decision to go fishing could be seen as a return to his previous occupation as a fisherman, possibly indicating his confusion about what to do next. The fact that the other disciples chose to accompany Peter suggests their unity and camaraderie. They stood with Peter and supported him in his decision. However, their fishing expedition that night turned out to be fruitless. The absence of a catch highlights the futility of their efforts without Jesus’ presence and guidance. Later Jesus appears to them on the shore, directs them to cast their net, and they experience a miraculous catch. He performs a miraculous catch of fish and has breakfast with them. Jesus then restores Peter and reaffirms his mission. This encounter serves as a turning point for Peter, as Jesus reinstates him and gives him a renewed purpose and mission. Overall, John 21:3 illustrates the disciples’ state of confusion and their attempt to revert to their former way of life. It emphasizes the importance of relying on Jesus’ guidance and presence for fruitful endeavors. It also highlights Jesus’ restorative power and his ability to give direction and purpose to those who follow him.
