John 21:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:35

“Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.”

Context:The Gospel of John records several appearances of Jesus to His disciples after His resurrection. In John 21, the disciples, who were mainly fishermen, had returned to their former occupation of fishing on the Sea of Galilee. However, they had been fishing all night and had caught nothing. As the morning came, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize Him yet.

Jesus addresses the disciples as “children” here, indicating a term of endearment and familiarity. He asks them if they have caught any fish or “meat.” This question may have served two purposes: to engage in conversation with the disciples and to set the stage for the miracle that would follow.

The disciples reply to Jesus, indicating that they had not caught any fish. This response emphasizes their failed attempts despite their expertise as fishermen. Their answer sets the stage for the miraculous catch that Jesus is about to facilitate.

Significance and Lessons:

  • Jesus’ Care and Provision:Jesus’ question to the disciples reveals His concern for their needs. Despite being the risen Lord, Jesus shows Himself to be attentive to the practical needs of His followers. He cares about their physical well-being, including their sustenance and livelihood. This highlights His loving and compassionate nature.

The disciples’ response of not having any fish highlights their reliance on their own efforts, which resulted in failure. It serves as a reminder that our human abilities and efforts alone may fall short in fulfilling our needs and desires. It underscores the importance of depending on Jesus and His provision rather than relying solely on ourselves.

Jesus’ Power to Provide:Following this passage, Jesus instructs the disciples to cast their net on the right side of the boat, resulting in an abundant catch of fish (John 21:6). This miracle showcases Jesus’ power and authority over nature. It demonstrates that when we trust in Him and follow His guidance, He can bring about blessings and abundance even in seemingly hopeless situations.

Spiritual Application:

  • Beyond the literal meaning of this passage, we can draw spiritual lessons from it. Just as the disciples were unable to catch fish until they followed Jesus’ instructions, we, too, may experience lack and emptiness when we rely solely on our own efforts. However, when we submit to Jesus’ guidance, He can provide and bless us abundantly in our spiritual lives as well.

In conclusion, John 21:5 reveals Jesus’ care for His disciples’ practical needs, their dependence on Him, and His power to provide abundantly. It encourages us to trust in Jesus, recognizing that He is attentive to our needs and has the ability to bless us beyond our own capabilities.
