John 21:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:35

“As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.”

Context:John 21 is the epilogue of the Gospel of John, where Jesus appears to His disciples after His resurrection. In this particular verse, the disciples, including Peter, had just finished a fishing trip on the Sea of Galilee and had come to shore.

Symbolism of Fire:The fire of coals mentioned in this verse holds symbolic significance. Fire is often associated with purification and refining. It can also represent the presence and work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, as the purifier and refiner, desires to work in the lives of His disciples, refining them and making them more like Him. The fire can also represent the passionate love of Christ for His followers.

Fish and Bread:The mention of fish and bread in this verse reminds us of previous events during Jesus’ ministry. Jesus performed a miracle by feeding a multitude of people with just a few fish and loaves of bread (Matthew 14:13-21). Here, we see a similar provision of food, pointing to Jesus’ provision for His disciples’ physical needs. It also serves as a reminder of His power and ability to provide for His followers.

Foreshadowing the Eucharist:This scene by the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus provides fish and bread, can be seen as a foreshadowing of the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. In the Last Supper, Jesus broke bread and shared it with His disciples, saying, “This is my body” (Matthew 26:26). He also referred to the wine as His blood. The provision of fish and bread in John 21:9 can be seen as a precursor to this significant event.

Peter’s Restoration:This verse is also significant in the context of Peter’s restoration after his denial of Jesus. In John 21:15-17, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him, to which Peter responds affirmatively. This interaction allows Peter to publicly reaffirm his love and commitment to Jesus, thereby restoring his relationship with the Lord. The provision of food in this verse can be seen as a gesture of grace and acceptance from Jesus towards Peter.
