Acts 10:45
“And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Context:In Acts 10, we find the account of Cornelius, a devout Gentile centurion, who received a vision from God instructing him to send for Peter. Meanwhile, Peter also had a vision where God showed him that he should not consider any person as common or unclean. As Peter arrived at Cornelius’ house, he realised that God’s plan was to extend salvation to the Gentiles as well. This verse captures the amazement of the Jewish believers who accompanied Peter when they witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles.
Importance of Circumcision:The phrase “they of the circumcision” refers to the Jewish believers who were circumcised according to the Jewish law. In the early church, there was a debate regarding whether Gentiles needed to be circumcised and follow Jewish customs in order to become followers of Jesus Christ. The astonishment of the Jewish believers in this verse demonstrates that they initially thought salvation was exclusively for the Jewish people. However, they were now confronted with the undeniable evidence that the Holy Spirit was being poured out on the Gentiles as well.
Inclusion of the Gentiles:The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles was a significant moment in the early church because it marked a major shift in the understanding of God’s plan of salvation. This event demonstrated that God’s salvation was not limited to the Jewish people but was intended for people of all nations and backgrounds. It broke down the barrier between Jews and Gentiles and emphasised the inclusive nature of the Gospel. This event laid the foundation for the acceptance of Gentile believers into the early Christian community without imposing the requirement of circumcision and adherence to Jewish customs.
The Gift of the Holy Spirit:The pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles confirmed that they were fully accepted and received by God, just as the Jewish believers were. The gift of the Holy Spirit is a sign of God’s presence, empowerment, and guidance. It signifies the indwelling of God’s Spirit within believers, enabling them to live transformed lives and equipping them for service in the Kingdom of God. The Gentiles receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit demonstrated that they were now partakers of the same blessings and privileges as the Jewish believers.
Challenging Prejudices:This verse challenges the deeply ingrained prejudice and exclusivity that the Jewish believers held towards the Gentiles. It forced them to reevaluate their understanding of God’s plan and embrace the truth that God’s grace is available to all, regardless of their ethnic or cultural background. It reminds us that God is not limited by human distinctions and that His love and salvation are extended to every person who believes in Jesus Christ.
