Acts 21:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:43

“There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.”

Context:The book of Acts, written by Luke, chronicles the early history of the Christian church and the spread of the gospel. In this particular passage, the apostle Paul, accompanied by some disciples from Caesarea, arrives in Jerusalem. They bring along Mnason, an old disciple from Cyprus, who offers them lodging.

Fellowship and Hospitality:Acts 21:16 highlights the importance of fellowship and hospitality within the early Christian community. The disciples from Caesarea not only accompany Paul on his journey to Jerusalem but also arrange accommodation through Mnason. This act of providing lodging reflects the spirit of hospitality and support among believers. It demonstrates the mutual care and solidarity that should exist within the body of Christ.

Mnason, an Old Disciple:The passage describes Mnason as an “old disciple.” While it could imply his age, it more likely refers to his long-standing commitment to following Jesus. Mnason had likely been a disciple of Christ for many years and had remained faithful to his calling. This suggests the enduring faithfulness of believers who continue to serve the Lord and support fellow believers, even in their later years.

Importance of Discipleship:Mnason’s presence also emphasizes the significance of discipleship within the Christian faith. Discipleship involves a lifelong commitment to following Jesus, growing in knowledge and obedience, and helping others on their spiritual journey. Mnason’s role in providing lodging for Paul and his companions demonstrates the practical support that disciples can offer to those engaged in ministry.

Unity in the Body of Christ:The fact that disciples from Caesarea accompanied Paul and that Mnason, a disciple from Cyprus, offered lodging signifies the unity and cooperation within the early Christian community. Though they came from different places, these believers joined together to support one another and participate in the advancement of the gospel. It serves as a reminder that, as followers of Christ, we are part of a larger family, transcending geographical, cultural, and ethnic boundaries.
