Especially, because I know thee to be expert in all customes and questions which are among the Iewes: wherefore I beseech thee to heare mee patiently. Acts 26:3 (KJV)

“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.” This verse provides background information about Paul and his upbringing. Let us break it down and explore its significance.

Paul’s Jewish Identity: Paul begins by establishing his identity as a Jew. He emphasizes that he was born in Tarsus, a city in the region of Cilicia, and notes that he was educated under Gamaliel. This reference to his Jewish heritage helps to establish a connection with his audience, as King Agrippa and the people present were also Jews.

Education under Gamaliel: Paul mentions that he was “brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel.” Gamaliel was a highly respected Jewish teacher and a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. By studying under Gamaliel, Paul received a comprehensive education in Jewish law and traditions, highlighting his credentials and deep understanding of the Jewish faith.

Taught According to the Perfect Manner of the Law: Paul adds that he was taught according to the “perfect manner of the law of the fathers.” This phrase underscores the strict adherence to the Jewish law and traditions that Paul received during his education. It implies that he was instructed with great precision and thoroughness, following the teachings of the ancient Jewish patriarchs and their interpretations of the law.

Zealousness for God: The verse concludes by stating that Paul was “zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.” This statement implies that Paul, like his audience, was fervently dedicated to the worship and service of God. It suggests that he was not a casual or apathetic observer of the Jewish faith but demonstrated great passion and commitment to God’s commandments.

Overall Significance: Acts 26:3 highlights Paul’s background as a devout Jew with a comprehensive education in Jewish law. It establishes his credibility as he prepares to share his conversion story and defend his faith before King Agrippa and the gathered audience. The passage also emphasizes Paul’s zeal for God and his dedication to the Jewish traditions of his time, reinforcing his authority to speak on matters of faith and custom.
