Acts 26:16

Listen to this article

“But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;”

Context:Acts 26 records the account of Paul’s defense before King Agrippa and Festus. In this chapter, Paul recounts his conversion experience and his subsequent mission to preach the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles. Acts 26:16 is a part of Paul’s testimony, where he recounts the encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Rising and standing upon thy feet:In this verse, Jesus instructs Paul to rise and stand upon his feet. This command can be seen as a physical action symbolizing Paul’s spiritual awakening and readiness to serve the Lord. It represents a call to action, urging Paul to fulfill the purpose for which he was chosen.

The purpose of Paul’s calling:Jesus tells Paul that He appeared to him for a specific purpose. The purpose is twofold: to make him a minister and a witness. As a minister, Paul is called to serve God, proclaim the Gospel, and shepherd the people of God. As a witness, Paul is commissioned to testify about the things he has seen, including his encounter with Jesus and the truth of the Gospel.

The things seen and the things to come:Jesus instructs Paul to be a witness not only of the things he has already seen but also of the things in which Jesus will appear to him in the future. This implies that Paul’s mission extends beyond his immediate experience on the road to Damascus. It encompasses his ongoing encounter with Jesus and the revelations he will receive throughout his ministry.

Application for believers today:While this verse directly addresses Paul’s calling and commission, there are several lessons we can draw from it for our own lives as believers:

  • – We are called to rise and stand upon our feet, ready to respond to God’s call and serve Him faithfully.
  • – Like Paul, we are called to be ministers and witnesses of the Gospel. We are to proclaim the truth of God’s Word and testify to His work in our lives.
  • – Our mission as believers extends beyond our initial conversion experience. God continues to reveal Himself to us and calls us to share His truth with others.
  • – We should be open to the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, allowing Him to guide us and reveal His will to us.

In conclusion, Acts 26:16 highlights Paul’s divine encounter and his subsequent calling as a minister and witness. It reminds us of our own calling as believers to rise, stand, and fulfill our purpose of serving God and testifying to His truth.
