Acts 28:14
Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
Acts 28:14 (KJV)
Context
This verse records the final stage of Paul’s journey to Rome as a prisoner. After being shipwrecked on Malta, Paul and his companions sailed to Puteoli, a major Italian port on the Bay of Naples. There they found brethren—fellow believers in Christ—who desired them to tarry, or remain, with them for seven days. The presence of Christians in Puteoli shows how the gospel had already spread beyond Jerusalem into Italy.
Meaning
The word “brethren” indicates a community of believers already established in Puteoli. Their invitation to stay for a week reflects Christian hospitality and the mutual encouragement that comes from fellowship. The verse concludes, “and so we went toward Rome,” showing that this brief stop delayed but did not deter Paul’s journey. His arrival in Rome was not accidental but part of God’s plan, as he had earlier been assured by the Lord that he would bear witness in Rome (Acts 23:11).
Biblical connections
The seven-day stay mirrors the pattern of early Christian gatherings, where believers spent extended time together in teaching and fellowship. Throughout Paul’s journeys, God directed his steps and placed him in situations that furthered the kingdom. This passage shows that God provided a supportive environment for Paul during his journey to Rome.
Application
Although Paul was eager to reach Rome and share the gospel there, he honored the invitation to stay in Puteoli for a week. This demonstrates his willingness to be flexible and obedient to God’s leading. Sometimes God interrupts our plans or redirects our paths for a specific purpose, and it is essential to discern His guidance and respond in obedience.
Reflection
God often provides encouragement and community along the path of obedience, even when the destination involves hardship. The fellowship Paul experienced was a foretaste of the broader Christian community he would find in Rome. Believers are called to support each other and grow in faith through shared experiences, opening their homes and hearts to fellow believers as a demonstration of Christian love.
