Acts 28:24

And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

Acts 28:24 (KJV)

Acts 28 is the final chapter of the Book of Acts, which records the establishment and growth of the early Christian Church. The apostle Paul, after being arrested in Jerusalem and appealing to Caesar, was on his way to Rome as a prisoner. In verse 23, Paul gathered the Jewish leaders in Rome to present the Gospel to them, spending the entire day explaining and testifying about the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.

Acts 28:24 describes the different reactions of the Jewish audience to Paul’s message. The same message produced belief in some and unbelief in others. This mixed response is a recurring pattern throughout the Book of Acts, where the proclamation of the Gospel consistently evokes diverse reactions from its hearers. The verse highlights that faith is not forced upon anyone but is a personal decision. Those who believed were those to whom it was given to believe, emphasizing that faith is a gift of God that comes by hearing the word when attended with divine power. This faith is not merely intellectual assent but is cordially believed, embraced, and professed.

The immediate context shows that the Jewish leaders disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul’s final statement, which was a direct quotation from the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet (Acts 28:25-27). This connection to Isaiah 6:9-10 frames the unbelief of some as a fulfillment of prophetic Scripture about a people who hear but do not understand and see but do not perceive.

Acts 28:24 challenges us to consider our response to the Gospel. Just like the Jewish audience in Rome, we have the opportunity to believe or reject the truth of God’s Word. It is essential for each individual to carefully examine the claims of Christianity and make a personal decision about faith in Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul’s commitment to sharing the Gospel is evident in this verse. Despite facing persecution and opposition throughout his ministry, Paul continued to preach the Good News. This verse reminds us of the diverse reactions that can be expected when sharing the Gospel. Not everyone will accept the message, but it is still our duty to proclaim it faithfully.

Acts 28:24 highlights the mixed response to Paul’s message, with some believing and others not. This verse emphasizes the role of personal faith in accepting or rejecting the Gospel. It also encourages us to faithfully share the message of salvation, even though people’s responses may vary.
