Romans 4:13

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.”

Context:The book of Romans, written by the apostle Paul, is a profound letter addressing various aspects of the Christian faith. In Romans 4, Paul discusses the righteousness that comes through faith by using Abraham as an example.

The Promise:In verse 13, Paul highlights the promise given to Abraham, which was not merely an earthly inheritance but something far greater: to be the heir of the world. This promise goes beyond physical possessions and refers to the spiritual blessings and inheritance available through faith.

Not through the Law:Paul emphasises that the promise to Abraham and his descendants was not based on the law. The Mosaic Law, given later to the Israelites, did not grant them exclusive rights to this promise. Instead, the promise was based on something more fundamental and timeless: faith.

The Righteousness of Faith:Paul clarifies that the promise made to Abraham was obtained through the righteousness of faith. It was Abraham’s faith in God that led to his righteousness, which set him apart. This faith, rooted in trust and belief, allowed him to receive the promise.

Application:The message of Romans 4:13 is relevant for Christians today. It reminds believers that their relationship with God is not based on following a set of rules or legalistic practices but on faith. We are justified before God by placing our trust in Him and His promises, just as Abraham did.

  • The Inheritance:As heirs of Abraham, we share in the promise of salvation and the blessings of God’s kingdom. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we become partakers of the inheritance that was promised. This inheritance includes forgiveness of sins, eternal life, fellowship with God, and a place in His eternal kingdom.
  • Encouragement:Romans 4:13 serves as an encouragement for believers. It assures us that our faith in God and His promises is not in vain. We can trust that He will fulfil His word and grant us the inheritance He has prepared for us.
