Romans 9:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:31
Listen to this article

“That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s briefly review the surrounding verses. In Romans 9:6-8, Paul is addressing the issue of Israel’s unbelief and how it relates to God’s faithfulness to His promises. He explains that not all physical descendants of Israel are considered children of God; rather, it is those who are children of the promise who are regarded as the true seed.

Children of the flesh:The phrase "children of the flesh" refers to those who are descendants of Abraham according to physical lineage, purely based on biological or ethnic connection. Being physically descended from Abraham does not automatically guarantee one’s status as a child of God or a recipient of His promises.

Children of the promise:On the other hand, the "children of the promise" are those who are spiritually connected to God through faith. They are the ones who embrace the promises made by God and trust in Him for their salvation. This includes both Jewish believers who place their faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Gentile believers who come to faith in Christ.

Spiritual lineage:Paul is emphasizing that being part of God’s family is not primarily determined by physical lineage but rather by faith and the promise of God. In other words, true membership in the people of God is based on a spiritual relationship and identity, not merely a biological one.

Implication:The distinction made in this verse reinforces the idea that salvation is not based on works, ethnicity, or human efforts, but on God’s grace and the response of faith. It highlights the inclusive nature of God’s plan of redemption, where individuals from all backgrounds can become part of His chosen people by embracing the promises of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
