Romans 11:22
Beholde therefore the goodnesse and seueritie of God: on them which fell, seueritie; but towards thee, goodnesse, if thou continue in his goodnesse: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. Romans 11:22 (KJV)
Context: To understand the verse better, it’s essential to consider its place within the chapter. In Romans 11, Paul discusses the salvation of Israel and how God’s mercy extends to the Gentiles. He emphasizes that God has not rejected His people (Israel) completely and that there is still hope for their salvation.
Goodness and Severity of God: The verse highlights two aspects of God’s nature—goodness and severity. This phrasing reflects the dual character of God, who is both loving and merciful, as well as righteous and just.
Severity towards the Fallen: In this context, “those who have fallen” is commonly understood to refer to Israel, whose rejection of Jesus as Messiah led to a period of judgment. The severity mentioned denotes God’s just response to unbelief, not an absence of love.
God’s Goodness towards Believers: The passage then turns to the Gentile believers who have embraced faith in Jesus Christ. Their inclusion in God’s covenantal promises is described as an outpouring of divine goodness and mercy.
Continuing in God’s Goodness: The conditional clause—“if ever you continue in his goodness”—underscores the importance of perseverance and faithfulness in the Christian life. Believers are called to remain steadfast, continuing to follow Christ and live according to His teachings.
Warning of Being Cut Off: The verse concludes with a warning that if the Gentile believers do not continue in God’s goodness, they too can be “cut off.” This refers to exclusion from the covenant community (the olive tree metaphor), signifying severance from God’s saving promises. While some interpret this as a loss of salvation, others see it as a caution against complacency or falling away from the faith. Either way, the passage stresses the need to stay connected to God and maintain a vibrant relationship with Him.
