Romans 14:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:31
Listen to this article

“Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.”

Context:The book of Romans, written by the Apostle Paul, is a letter addressing the Roman church. In Chapter 14, Paul discusses matters of personal convictions and the need for believers to show love and acceptance toward one another despite differences in opinions and practices.

Judging Others:The verse begins with a rhetorical question, “Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant?” This question challenges the tendency of believers to pass judgment on fellow believers for their personal convictions or practices. It reminds us that it is not our place to judge or condemn one another.

Each Believer’s Accountability:Paul emphasises that every believer is accountable to their own master, who is God. This means that ultimately, each person’s actions and decisions are subject to God’s judgment, not the judgment of their fellow believers. Therefore, it is essential for believers to focus on their own relationship with God and leave the judgment to Him.

God’s Ability to Uphold:The verse concludes by assuring that God is able to make His servants stand. This reminds believers that their spiritual standing is not dependent on the opinions or judgments of others. Instead, their security and strength come from God alone. He has the power to uphold and strengthen His people, regardless of the challenges they may face.

Overall, Romans 14:4 teaches us to avoid passing judgment on fellow believers and to recognise that each person is accountable to God. It encourages us to trust in God’s ability to uphold and strengthen His servants. This verse calls us to focus on our own spiritual walk and demonstrate love and acceptance toward others, rather than engaging in judgemental behaviour.
