Romans 14:15

Posted on 18 May at 13:56

But if thy brother be grieued with thy meate: now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. Romans 14:15 (KJV)

The book of Romans, written by the Apostle Paul, addresses a range of theological and practical issues faced by the early Christian community in Rome. In Chapter 14 Paul turns his attention to personal convictions and practices, especially matters of diet and the observance of special days. In this context he urges believers to be sensitive to the feelings and convictions of fellow Christians. The verse highlights that walking in love and showing charity must take precedence over personal preferences and freedom.

Paul warns against causing grief or offence to a brother or sister because of one’s dietary choices. Insensitivity can damage the unity and harmony of the body of Christ, potentially harming a fellow believer’s faith and hindering spiritual growth. The person who might be grieved is “someone for whom Christ died,” underscoring the profound worth of each individual in God’s eyes. This truth calls believers to treat one another with respect, love, and consideration, recognizing that every person is the object of Christ’s sacrificial love.

While the immediate issue concerns food, the principle extends far beyond meals. Believers are invited to examine how their actions affect others, measuring their conduct against the self‑sacrificial love of Christ. Prioritising the well‑being and spiritual growth of brothers and sisters should shape every decision, whether it involves food, drink, or any other matter that could cause another’s distress.

Throughout the chapter Paul stresses the importance of maintaining Christian unity even when convictions differ on non‑essential issues. Mutual acceptance, respect, and love must replace judgment or contempt. The overall message of Romans 14:15 is a call to exercise sensitivity, love, and understanding toward fellow believers, placing the spiritual welfare of others above personal liberty. By doing so the church can foster a harmonious and united community of faith.

Readers are encouraged to read the surrounding verses and consider the entire chapter to grasp fully the context and the depth of Paul’s teaching to the early Romans.
