Romans 16:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.”

Context: The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. It contains theological teachings and practical instructions on living a life in Christ. In the closing chapter, Paul addresses specific individuals and sends greetings to various members of the church.

Exegesis: a) “Now I beseech you, brethren”: Paul is addressing the believers in Rome, emphasizing their relationship as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. He is about to give them an important exhortation.

b) “mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned”: Paul instructs the believers to observe and take note of those who are causing divisions and leading others into offenses against the teachings they have received. The emphasis is on identifying those who promote teachings that contradict the true gospel.

c) “and avoid them”: The believers are urged to distance themselves from such individuals. This implies not only avoiding their company but also not endorsing or participating in their divisive or false teachings.

Key Lessons:

  • Guard against divisions: The unity of believers is essential, and divisions can hinder the growth and effectiveness of the Church. It is crucial to identify and address any divisive elements within the body of believers.
  • Be discerning in doctrine: Believers are called to be discerning and knowledgeable about the teachings of the faith. It is important to study and understand the true doctrine based on God’s Word, so as to identify teachings that deviate from it.
  • Avoid false teachers: Paul warns against those who propagate false teachings. By avoiding such individuals, believers can protect themselves from being led astray and can maintain their own spiritual well-being.
  • Application:

    • Cultivate unity: As believers, we should actively work towards unity in the body of Christ, promoting love, understanding, and cooperation among fellow believers.
    • Seek sound teaching: We should devote ourselves to studying the Scriptures diligently and seek out reliable sources of biblical teaching to ensure we are grounded in the truth.
    • Exercise discernment: Develop a discerning spirit that enables you to recognize teachings or practices that go against the core doctrines of Christianity. This will help you avoid being swayed by false or divisive influences.
    • Pray for wisdom: Seek guidance from the Holy Spirit when faced with challenging situations or teachings that may cause division. Pray for wisdom to discern truth from error and to handle such situations with grace and love.

Remember that the overarching theme of the Bible is love, so while avoiding those who cause divisions is important, we should always approach these situations with a heart of love and a desire for reconciliation whenever possible.

This Bible study on Romans 16:17 encourages believers to be discerning, promote unity, and stand firm in the true doctrine of the faith.
