1 Corinthians 6:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:34
Listen to this article

“I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?”

Context:The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to address various issues and concerns within the Corinthian church. In this particular chapter, Paul addresses the issue of lawsuits among believers and the need for them to resolve their conflicts internally instead of taking them to secular courts.

The Problem of Lawsuits Among Believers:The Corinthian church was facing a problem where believers were taking legal disputes and conflicts to secular courts to resolve them. This was causing division and tarnishing the testimony of the church. Paul’s aim was to correct this behaviour and provide guidance on how to handle such matters within the church.

The Call for Wisdom:In verse 5, Paul rebukes the Corinthians for their lack of wise individuals who could serve as impartial judges or arbitrators to settle disputes among believers. He expresses his disappointment that even among a group of believers, there seems to be no one with the wisdom necessary to judge between their brethren.

Resolving Conflicts within the Church:Paul’s intention is not to encourage the Corinthians to seek judgment from secular courts but rather to encourage them to resolve their disputes internally. He implies that within the body of believers, there should be individuals who possess godly wisdom and are capable of impartially judging between their fellow believers.

The Importance of Wisdom:The need for wise judgment in resolving conflicts is emphasised in this verse. Wisdom is a valuable attribute that enables believers to make sound judgments based on biblical principles, love, and understanding. The absence of wise individuals in the Corinthian church was a cause for concern because it hindered the church’s ability to handle disputes and maintain unity.

The Shame of the Corinthians:Paul’s reference to shame in addressing the Corinthians indicates his disappointment and desire for correction. He expects more from them as believers in Christ and reminds them that their behaviour in handling disputes should reflect the values of their faith.

  • Seek Internal Resolution:As believers, we should make every effort to resolve conflicts and disputes within the church community rather than resorting to secular legal processes. The church should provide a platform for resolving issues and promoting unity among believers.
  • Value Wisdom:Recognise the importance of wisdom in handling conflicts. Pray for discernment and seek godly counsel when faced with disagreements or disputes. Develop the ability to judge with impartiality, love, and biblical understanding.
  • Maintain a Godly Witness:Remember that our actions and responses as believers reflect on the testimony of the church and our faith. Strive to handle conflicts in a way that honours God and promotes unity among believers, seeking resolution rather than division.
  • Encourage Wise Leadership:Support and encourage the development of wise and discerning leaders within the church who can help mediate and resolve conflicts among believers. Recognise and appreciate those who demonstrate wisdom and seek their guidance when needed.

By studying this verse and its context, we can learn valuable lessons about resolving conflicts, valuing wisdom, and maintaining a godly witness in our interactions with fellow believers.
