1 Corinthians 6:19

Listen to this article

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”

Context:The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to address various issues and provide guidance to the church in Corinth. In this particular section (1 Corinthians 6:12-20), Paul focuses on the topic of sexual immorality and how it is contrary to the Christian faith.

The Body as a Temple:Paul begins by asking a rhetorical question, “What? know ye not…” The purpose of this question is to draw attention to an important truth. He then proceeds to explain that the body of a believer is the temple of the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit resides within the individual believer, having been given to them by God.

Ownership and Stewardship:Paul emphasizes that believers are not their own. Instead, they belong to God. This idea highlights the concept of stewardship, meaning that believers are entrusted with their bodies to be used for God’s purposes. As stewards, we are responsible for taking care of our bodies and using them in ways that honour God.

Implications for Sexual Immorality:Paul’s primary intention in this passage is to address the issue of sexual immorality. He goes on to explain in verses 15-18 that our bodies are members of Christ, and we should not unite them with a prostitute or engage in sexual immorality. By doing so, we defile the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Honouring God with Our Bodies:The overarching message of 1 Corinthians 6:19 is that our bodies have great value and significance. As temples of the Holy Spirit, we are called to live in a way that reflects God’s presence within us. This includes abstaining from sexual immorality and engaging in behaviour that glorifies God in all aspects of our lives.

Application to Other Areas:While this verse specifically addresses sexual immorality, the principle of honouring God with our bodies extends beyond this context. It also applies to other areas of our lives, such as our health, our relationships, and our choices. We are called to treat our bodies with respect and make decisions that align with God’s will.

In conclusion, 1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds believers that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are called to honour God with our bodies. This involves avoiding sexual immorality and living in a way that reflects God’s presence within us. May we strive to be good stewards of our bodies, glorifying God in all that we do.
