1 Corinthians 9:21
To them that are without Law, as without Law (being not without Law to God, but vnder the Law to Christ,) that I might gaine them that are without Law. 1 Corinthians 9:21 (KJV)
The apostle Paul wrote the First Epistle to the Corinthians to address various issues and concerns within the Corinthian church. In Chapter 9 he discusses his apostolic authority and the rights he possessed as a minister of the Gospel, and he explains that he willingly forfeited those rights for the sake of winning people to Christ.
In verse 21 Paul emphasizes his approach to reaching different groups of people with the Gospel. To those who are “without law” (Gentiles or non‑Jews) he presents himself as being “without law,” yet he clarifies that he is not without law to God but under the law of Christ.
Paul recognizes that he is called to reach people from diverse backgrounds. By becoming “all things to all men” (verse 22) he adapts his approach to meet people where they are, allowing him to connect with various cultural, religious, and social groups and ultimately lead them to Christ.
His statement about being “without law” does not mean disregarding God’s moral standards or living lawlessly. Rather, it highlights his freedom from the Jewish ceremonial laws and customs, while his actions remain guided by his commitment to Christ and obedience to God’s moral law.
Paul stresses that, although he may adjust his approach to different audiences, he remains under the law of Christ—the teachings and principles that Jesus established, emphasizing love, grace, and the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
His primary motivation is to “gain them that are without law.” The goal is to win souls for Christ, leading to salvation and reconciliation with God, demonstrating Paul’s deep commitment to evangelism and his willingness to remove unnecessary barriers between people and the Gospel.
Like Paul, we should strive to understand and respect different cultural backgrounds, traditions, and perspectives when sharing the Gospel. This cultural sensitivity helps bridge gaps and fosters effective communication of God’s love and truth.
While the core message of the Gospel remains unchanged, our methods of outreach can vary according to context and audience. We should be willing to adjust our approach without compromising the integrity of the Gospel in order to engage effectively with different groups.
Our actions and decisions must always align with the teachings of Christ. Though we may adapt to various circumstances, we are bound by Christ’s law of love and righteousness.
Paul’s burning desire to see others come to faith challenges us to examine our own zeal for sharing the Gospel. We should actively seek opportunities to engage with people, build relationships, and communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ.
