1 Corinthians 10:7

Listen to this article

“Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s look at the broader context of 1 Corinthians 10. In the preceding verses, Paul discusses the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness and highlights their experiences as examples for the Corinthian believers. He talks about how the Israelites were all under the cloud, passed through the sea, were baptized unto Moses, and ate the same spiritual food and drink from the spiritual rock, which was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:1-4). Paul then warns the Corinthians not to repeat the Israelites’ mistakes.

Idolatry:Paul specifically addresses the issue of idolatry in this verse. Idolatry refers to the worship or devotion given to any object, person, or idea other than the true God. The Corinthians, living in a culture steeped in pagan worship and surrounded by idols, were susceptible to falling into idolatrous practices. Paul urges them to avoid this sin and not follow the example of those who came before them.

Historical Reference:Paul cites an incident from Israel’s history to illustrate the consequences of idolatry. He refers to the time when the Israelites, led by Moses, had just come out of Egypt and were in the wilderness. The people sat down to eat and drink, and then they rose up to play. This is a reference to the incident of the golden calf recorded in Exodus 32:1-6. While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the people became impatient and asked Aaron, Moses’ brother, to make them a god to worship. Aaron complied and fashioned a golden calf from their gold jewelry. The people then engaged in idolatrous worship, offering sacrifices to the golden calf and engaging in revelry.

Application:Paul’s purpose in referencing this historical event is to warn the Corinthians about the dangers of idolatry and the consequences that follow. The Israelites’ idolatrous actions resulted in God’s anger and punishment. It led to severe consequences such as the breaking of the tablets of the Law, the destruction of the golden calf, and the deaths of many who had sinned. By highlighting this incident, Paul emphasizes the importance of staying away from idolatry and remaining faithful to God.

  • In summary:1 Corinthians 10:7 serves as a warning against idolatry, using the example of the Israelites’ idolatrous worship of the golden calf. It reminds believers of the consequences of turning away from the true God and indulging in sinful practices. The verse encourages Christians to stay faithful to God and avoid the lure of false gods or worldly distractions.
