Listen to this article

“For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life”

Context:The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular verse, Paul is describing a difficult experience he and his companions went through in Asia. He wants to ensure that the Corinthians are aware of the hardships they faced.

“For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia”:Paul begins by expressing his desire for the Corinthian believers to have knowledge of the trouble they experienced. Paul does not want them to be unaware or uninformed about the hardships they faced.

“That we were pressed out of measure, above strength”:Paul describes the intensity and severity of the trouble they encountered. The phrase “pressed out of measure” indicates that the pressure or burden they experienced went beyond what they could handle on their own. It suggests a sense of being overwhelmed and pushed to their limits.

“Insomuch that we despaired even of life”:This phrase reveals the depth of despair that Paul and his companions felt. The trials were so severe that they even questioned their own survival. It reflects the magnitude of their emotional and physical distress.

Lessons to Learn:

  • a. Transparency in Sharing Troubles: Paul’s intention was not to hide or conceal the hardships they faced but rather to openly share their experiences with the Corinthians. This demonstrates the importance of honesty and vulnerability within the Christian community, allowing for mutual support and encouragement during difficult times.
  • b. Overwhelming Challenges: The verse highlights that believers can face trials that exceed their own strength and abilities. This reminds us that in our own lives, we may encounter situations that seem insurmountable. However, it is an opportunity to lean on God’s strength and seek His guidance, trusting that He will provide the necessary resources and comfort.
  • c. Human Weakness and God’s Sufficiency: The verse emphasizes the limitations of human strength and the need for divine intervention. When we reach the point of despair, it is an invitation to rely on God’s power and grace. He is the source of strength, and in our weakness, He can manifest His strength.
  • d. Perseverance and Hope: Although Paul and his companions faced tremendous difficulty, they did not lose hope. They endured and ultimately found encouragement and comfort in God. This teaches us the importance of perseverance in times of trouble, trusting that God’s faithfulness will sustain us and bring us through even the most challenging circumstances.

In summary, 2 Corinthians 1:8 highlights the Apostle Paul’s openness about the intense trouble he faced in Asia. The verse reminds us of the importance of transparency in sharing our burdens, the reality of overwhelming challenges, the sufficiency of God in our weakness, and the perseverance and hope we can find in Him.
