2 Corinthians 6:13

Listen to this article

“Now for a recompense in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the book of 2 Corinthians to address the believers in Corinth and strengthen their faith. In this particular verse, Paul is discussing the need for the Corinthians to respond with love and openness to his apostolic ministry and teaching.

Key Points:

  • Recompense and Relationship:Paul begins by mentioning “recompense.” In this context, it refers to a response or reaction from the Corinthians toward Paul’s ministry and teaching. Paul had poured himself out for the sake of the Corinthians, and now he urges them to respond likewise. This recompense is not about material compensation, but rather an emotional and relational response.
  • Parental Language:Paul uses parental language when he says, “I speak as unto my children.” He views himself as a spiritual father to the Corinthians, having played a significant role in their conversion and growth in the faith. This paternal relationship entails care, guidance, and discipline. He desires a close bond with them, and his words carry the weight of a loving father’s instruction.
  • Enlargement:The phrase “be ye also enlarged” can be understood in a few different ways. It may refer to the Corinthians’ need to broaden their hearts and affection toward Paul and his ministry. They are encouraged to expand their capacity for love, respect, and gratitude. It can also imply growth in their faith and spiritual maturity. The Corinthians are urged to increase in their understanding of God’s truth, to deepen their commitment to Christ, and to grow in their relationship with Him.

Lessons and Application:

  • Reciprocity and Gratitude:We can learn from Paul’s example of pouring ourselves out for the sake of others without expecting anything in return. In our relationships, both within the church and outside, we should show love, generosity, and selflessness. We ought to respond to the ministry and care we receive from others with gratitude and reciprocity.
  • Spiritual Parenting:The concept of spiritual parenthood is vital in the life of the Church. We can nurture and mentor younger believers, offering them guidance, teaching, and support. Just as a loving parent desires their children’s growth and well-being, we should invest in the spiritual growth of those around us.
  • Growth and Enlargement:We should continually seek growth in our faith and relationship with God. This involves expanding our understanding of His Word, deepening our prayer life, and developing our character to reflect Christ more fully. It also means opening our hearts to others, extending love and compassion, and being receptive to new challenges and opportunities.
  • Embrace Paul’s Teaching:The Corinthians were encouraged to embrace Paul’s teaching and authority as a trusted apostle. Similarly, we should diligently study the Word of God, seek wisdom from trusted spiritual leaders, and apply biblical principles to our lives. A humble and teachable attitude enables us to receive the blessings and insights that God wants to impart to us through His servants.

In conclusion, 2 Corinthians 6:13 calls for a reciprocal response of love, enlargement, and growth in our relationships, both with God and with one another. Let us embrace the teachings of the Bible and seek to live out the principles outlined in this verse, demonstrating love, gratitude, and spiritual growth.
