2 Corinthians 8:8

Listen to this article

“I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.”

This verse is part of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, specifically addressing the topic of giving and generosity. In this verse, Paul clarifies that he is not commanding the Corinthians to give, but rather he is speaking based on the example of others and to test the genuineness of their love.

Here are a few key points to consider in this verse:

  • The context of giving:The larger context of this verse is Paul’s encouragement to the Corinthian church to contribute to the collection for the saints in Jerusalem who were facing difficulties (2 Corinthians 8:1-4). Paul commends the Macedonian churches for their generosity, even though they were experiencing their own afflictions (2 Corinthians 8:2-3).
  • Voluntary giving:Paul emphasises that he is not giving a commandment, indicating that he does not want to force the Corinthians to give. He understands that true giving should come from a willing heart and a genuine desire to help others. It is not to be done out of obligation or compulsion, but rather as a reflection of the love and grace received from God.
  • Proving sincerity:Paul mentions that his purpose in speaking about this topic is to test the sincerity of the Corinthians’ love. By observing their willingness to give, Paul can assess the authenticity of their love for God and others. Genuine love should result in sacrificial giving and a desire to meet the needs of others.

Overall, 2 Corinthians 8:8 reminds us that giving should be voluntary and motivated by love. It is not about fulfilling a duty but about expressing genuine care and concern for others. Paul challenges the Corinthians to examine their hearts and evaluate the sincerity of their love through their willingness to give.

This verse encourages us to consider our own attitudes towards giving and generosity. Are we giving out of obligation or genuine love? Are we willing to sacrificially contribute to the needs of others, even in the midst of our own challenges? Let this verse inspire us to examine our hearts and strive to give with a sincere and loving spirit.
