2 Corinthians 8:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

But by an equalitie: that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want, that there may be equalitie, 2 Corinthians 8:14 (KJV)

But by an equality,

that now at this time your abundance

may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be

a supply for your want: that there may be equality: 2 Corinthians 8:14 (KJV)

In this passage Paul encourages the Corinthian believers to follow the example of the Macedonian churches in their generosity. The Macedonians, despite deep poverty, willingly gave beyond their means to support the saints in Jerusalem. Paul commends their sacrificial giving and urges the Corinthians to do likewise, framing the instruction within his broader exhortation concerning contributions for the Jerusalem saints.

Paul emphasizes the concept of equality in giving. He suggests that the Corinthians’ abundance should serve as a supply for those who lack, and likewise that the abundance of those who have received help should become a supply for the Corinthians when they are in need. The aim is not to create dependence or permanent inequality but to foster unity and shared responsibility within the body of Christ.

The reciprocal nature of giving is highlighted as mutual support. Those who have an abundance are called to support those in need, and when the Corinthians themselves face a time of need, the believers who were previously helped are expected to support them. This two‑way flow promotes a sense of interdependence among believers.

The underlying principle is that no one should enjoy abundance while others suffer lack. Paul is not calling for the eradication of all differences in wealth, but for the assurance that basic needs are met and that resources are fairly distributed within the Christian community. This principle challenges believers to examine their hearts and actions regarding generosity and to strive for a more equitable society.

Application of the verse urges believers to evaluate their own abundance and resources in light of surrounding needs. It calls for a self‑less, sacrificial attitude toward giving, recognizing that what we have is a blessing from God that can be used to bless others. It also reminds us to be open to receiving help when we are in need, acknowledging our interdependence and the importance of mutual support.

In summary, 2 Corinthians 8:14 teaches the principle of equality in giving and mutual support within the Christian community. It challenges us to consider the needs of others, to give sacrificially when we have abundance, and to humbly receive help when we lack. Ultimately, it calls us to foster unity and a sense of interdependence as we seek to embody the love of Christ in our relationships and actions.
