2 Corinthians 8:20

Listen to this article

“Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to consider the context of the entire passage. In this chapter, the Apostle Paul is discussing the collection of funds for the poor believers in Jerusalem. He commends the churches of Macedonia for their generosity and encourages the Corinthian church to follow their example.

Responsibility and Accountability:In verse 20, Paul expresses his concern about avoiding any blame in handling the generous offering. He is mindful of how the funds are administered and wants to ensure that no one could criticise him or the messengers who will be entrusted with this responsibility. This verse emphasises the importance of maintaining integrity and accountability in handling financial matters within the church.

Stewardship:The verse highlights the concept of stewardship, which is the responsible management of resources entrusted to us by God. Paul wants to ensure that the abundance of resources collected from the churches is used wisely and transparently. This implies that believers have a responsibility to manage their resources in a manner that honours God and serves the intended purpose.

Trust and Reputation:Paul’s concern for avoiding blame demonstrates the importance of maintaining trust and a good reputation in the eyes of both God and people. As representatives of Christ, believers should conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the character of Christ and protects the reputation of the church.

Application:This verse encourages believers today to exercise prudence, transparency, and accountability in handling their financial resources. It also emphasises the need for integrity and responsible stewardship, whether it’s in the context of managing church funds or personal finances. By doing so, we can avoid any potential criticism, maintain trust, and ensure that the resources entrusted to us are used in a way that brings glory to God.

  • In conclusion, 2 Corinthians 8:20 emphasises the importance of avoiding blame and maintaining integrity in the administration of resources. It calls believers to be responsible stewards, exercising transparency and accountability to ensure that resources are used wisely and in a manner that honours God.
