2 Corinthians 9:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:40
Listen to this article

“Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to examine the context in which it is written. The Apostle Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, addressing the topic of giving. In the previous chapter, he encourages the Corinthians to excel in the grace of giving and emphasizes the principle of sowing and reaping.

The Macedonian example:In verse 4, Paul refers to the people of Macedonia and their potential visit to Corinth. He expresses concern that if the Corinthians are unprepared in fulfilling their commitment to give, it would be embarrassing for both parties. Paul doesn’t want his confident boasting about the Corinthians’ generosity to be in vain.

The importance of preparedness:The verse highlights the significance of being prepared in fulfilling our commitments, especially when it comes to giving. It’s not only about making promises but also following through with actions. Paul wanted the Corinthians to honor their pledge, not only for the sake of their own reputation but also for the sake of maintaining trust and integrity within the body of believers.

Confidence in giving:Paul’s emphasis on confident boasting suggests that he had faith in the Corinthians’ ability and willingness to give. He believed that they had the potential to be generous and encouraged them to demonstrate that generosity. This verse teaches us that as Christians, we should strive to be dependable in fulfilling our promises, especially in the context of giving to support the work of the Lord.

Application today:While this verse specifically addresses the issue of giving, the principle of preparedness can be applied more broadly to various areas of our lives. It reminds us to honor our commitments, fulfill our responsibilities, and act with integrity in all aspects of life. Whether it’s in our relationships, work, or serving in our communities, being prepared and reliable is important.

In conclusion, 2 Corinthians 9:4 encourages us to be prepared and fulfill our commitments, just as the Apostle Paul urged the Corinthians to do in the context of giving. It reminds us of the importance of integrity and reliability in our actions and serves as a reminder to honor our promises.
