2 Corinthians 9:7

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

Context:The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular verse, Paul is addressing the topic of giving generously and cheerfully.

Heartfelt Giving:Paul begins by emphasising that giving should be a matter of personal conviction and intention. Each person should purpose in their own heart how much they want to give. This implies that giving should not be forced or coerced, but rather a voluntary act driven by the desire to contribute.

Not Grudgingly:Paul emphasises that giving should not be done with reluctance or resentment. It should not be motivated by a sense of obligation or duty alone. Instead, our attitude should be one of genuine willingness and joy.

No Necessity:Paul encourages the Corinthians to give without feeling compelled by external pressures. While there may be needs and demands, our giving should not be motivated solely by external requirements. It should come from a place of personal conviction and generosity.

God Loves a Cheerful Giver:Paul reminds the Corinthians that God takes delight in those who give with a joyful and cheerful heart. God values the attitude and motivation behind our giving as much as the act itself. When we give with a cheerful spirit, it reflects our love for God and our understanding of His abundant grace towards us.

Application:This verse encourages believers to approach giving with a positive mindset. It reminds us that giving is not merely an obligation, but an opportunity to participate in God’s work and demonstrate our love for Him. We are called to give generously, willingly, and joyfully, knowing that God sees the attitude of our hearts.

  • Reflecting on Our Giving:As we contemplate this verse, we can examine our own giving practices. Do we give cheerfully and generously, or do we give grudgingly or out of a sense of duty? Are we motivated by our love for God and His purposes? It’s essential to reflect on our hearts and seek to align our giving with the principles outlined in this verse.

Remember, this verse is not only about financial giving but can be applied to other areas of our lives as well, such as our time, talents, and resources. Ultimately, the key is to give with a joyful and willing heart, understanding that God is pleased with our cheerful generosity.
