2 Corinthians 10:3
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh.”
Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the Second Letter to the Corinthians to address various issues and concerns within the church in Corinth. In this particular verse, Paul is discussing the nature of the spiritual battle that believers face.
1. Walking in the flesh: Paul acknowledges that as human beings, we live in physical bodies and are subject to the realities of the physical world. We have limitations and weaknesses inherent in our fleshly existence.
2. The spiritual warfare: Paul emphasizes that our battle as believers is not fought on a physical level. It is not a literal war with weapons or strategies of the flesh. Instead, our warfare is spiritual in nature, involving the realm of unseen forces and powers.
3. The weapons of our warfare: In the subsequent verses, Paul explains the nature of the weapons we have at our disposal. He states in 2 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV), “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” The weapons he refers to are spiritual in nature, empowered by God, and capable of tearing down strongholds.
4. The source of our strength: While we may have weaknesses in the flesh, our true strength lies in God. We rely on His power, not our own, to overcome the spiritual battles we face. As Paul states in 2 Corinthians 10:4, our weapons are “mighty through God.”
5. The nature of the battle: The battle we engage in as believers is against spiritual strongholds, which can be thought of as false beliefs, ideologies, and spiritual forces that oppose God’s truth. These strongholds can hold people captive and hinder their relationship with God. Through the power of God, we can demolish these strongholds and set people free.
Application:
a. Awareness of the spiritual battle: It is essential for believers to be aware that they are engaged in a spiritual battle. While we may face challenges in the physical realm, the root of the battle lies in the spiritual realm.
b. Dependence on God’s strength: We should rely on God’s strength rather than our own abilities or strategies. It is through His power that we can overcome the obstacles and strongholds we encounter.
c. Using spiritual weapons: As believers, we are equipped with spiritual weapons such as prayer, the Word of God, faith, love, and the power of the Holy Spirit. These weapons are effective in fighting against spiritual strongholds and advancing God’s kingdom.
d. Demolishing strongholds: We are called to actively engage in tearing down strongholds by proclaiming the truth of God’s Word, interceding in prayer, and living out our faith as a testimony to others.
