2 Corinthians 10:6

Listen to this article

“And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”

Context:Before diving into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context in which it was written. The Apostle Paul wrote the Second Epistle to the Corinthians to address various issues and challenges the church in Corinth was facing. In this particular section, Paul is defending his apostolic authority against false teachers and those who questioned his credibility.

The Armor of God:In the preceding verses (2 Corinthians 10:3-5), Paul talks about the spiritual warfare believers face and how to engage in it. He emphasizes that the weapons of our warfare are not physical but spiritual. The battle is fought in the realm of thoughts, ideas, and strongholds. Paul encourages the Corinthians to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.

Readiness to Revenge Disobedience:In 2 Corinthians 10:6, Paul speaks of being “ready to revenge all disobedience.” This statement suggests that the Corinthian believers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, have the authority and responsibility to confront and deal with disobedience within the church. However, it’s important to note that the revenge spoken of here is not personal vindictiveness but rather a righteous response against disobedience for the purpose of restoring order and promoting godliness within the community of believers.

Obedience:Paul states that the Corinthians’ obedience must be fulfilled before they can effectively deal with disobedience. This implies that their own faithfulness and obedience to God’s Word are crucial prerequisites for addressing issues of disobedience within the church. It is necessary for believers to be firmly grounded in their own obedience to God’s commands and teachings before they can address the disobedience of others.

Application:While this verse was originally written to the church in Corinth, its principles are applicable to believers today. Here are a few key applications:

  • Personal Obedience:Each individual believer should focus on cultivating a life of obedience to God’s Word. This involves aligning one’s thoughts, attitudes, and actions with biblical principles.
  • Church Discipline:The verse highlights the responsibility of believers to address and correct disobedience within the church. This should be done in a spirit of love, seeking restoration and the spiritual well-being of the person involved.
  • The Authority of God’s Word:The verse reminds us of the power and authority of God’s Word in confronting disobedience. It is through the Scriptures that we gain discernment, correction, and instruction in righteousness.
  • Spiritual Warfare:The passage emphasizes that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces. Believers need to be equipped with the armor of God (as mentioned in Ephesians 6:10-18) and be vigilant in standing against the schemes of the enemy.

Remember, the overall message of this verse is to emphasize the importance of personal obedience and the responsibility of believers to address disobedience within the church in a manner consistent with God’s Word and guided by the Holy Spirit.
