Ephesians 1:2
“Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Context:The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul while he was in prison, around AD 60-62. It is addressed to the believers in Ephesus, a city in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). Ephesians is a letter that focuses on the glorious truths of the Christian faith, emphasizing the believer’s identity in Christ and the unity of the Church.
Grace:The verse begins with the words, “Grace be to you.” Grace is a central theme in the New Testament, representing God’s unmerited favour and kindness bestowed upon humanity. In Christianity, we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). This grace is freely given, not earned, and it is a foundational aspect of our relationship with God.
Peace:The verse continues, “and peace.” Peace refers to the inner tranquility and harmony that comes from being reconciled to God through Christ. As believers, we can experience peace with God because Jesus Christ has made peace between us and God through His sacrifice on the cross (Ephesians 2:14-16). This peace extends to our relationship with others and within ourselves as we trust in God.
Source of Grace and Peace:The verse further states, “from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” The ultimate source of grace and peace is God the Father, who is the author of every good gift (James 1:17). Additionally, grace and peace come through the Lord Jesus Christ, who reconciles us to the Father and grants us access to His grace (John 14:6).
Application:
- Gratitude:Reflect on the amazing grace and peace that God has bestowed upon you. Thank Him for His unmerited favour and the inner peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).
- Identity in Christ:Remember that as a believer, you are a recipient of God’s grace and peace. Your identity is found in Christ, and His grace empowers you to live a life pleasing to God (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Extend Grace and Peace:Just as you have received God’s grace and peace, seek to extend it to others. Show kindness, forgiveness, and love to those around you, reflecting the character of Christ (Ephesians 4:32).
Remember to study the verse in its broader context by reading the entire book of Ephesians. Prayerfully meditate on God’s grace and peace, allowing these truths to transform your life and relationships.
