Ephesians 6:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.”

Context:Ephesians 6:8 is part of the Apostle Paul’s teachings on the relationships between different members of society, particularly focusing on the roles of masters and servants (or slaves). In the preceding verses, Paul provides instructions for both masters and servants on how they should treat one another in a Christlike manner.

Doing Good:The verse begins by emphasising the importance of doing good things. It suggests that our actions have consequences and that we should strive to do what is right and pleasing to God. The Bible consistently encourages believers to do good works, as they reflect the character of God and demonstrate our faith.

Receiving from the Lord:The verse highlights the assurance that God rewards those who do good, regardless of their social status. It reminds us that our ultimate reward comes from the Lord, and He is the one who sees and acknowledges our actions. God is just and faithful, and He promises to reward our acts of obedience and righteousness.

Equality in God’s Eyes:The verse also underscores the equality of all believers in the eyes of God. Whether someone is a servant (bond) or a free person, God’s reward is not determined by their earthly status but by their faith and actions. In God’s kingdom, there is no partiality or favouritism based on social standing, but rather a recognition of the heart and the way we live our lives.

Application:Ephesians 6:8 encourages believers to persevere in doing good, knowing that God sees and rewards their efforts. It reminds us that our service and obedience to God’s commands are not in vain. We should aim to live a life pleasing to God, whether in our relationships, work, or other areas of service. Our actions should reflect our faith and demonstrate the love of Christ to others.

  • In summary:Ephesians 6:8 teaches us that doing good brings rewards from the Lord, regardless of our social status. It emphasises the equality of believers in God’s eyes and encourages us to live a life that honours Him in all that we do.
