Colossians 1:15

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians while he was in prison, addressing the believers in the city of Colossae. The letter tackles various issues, including the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ.

“Who is the image of the invisible God”:This verse highlights the unique nature of Jesus Christ. He is described as the “image of the invisible God.” The phrase “image of God” denotes that Jesus is the perfect representation and manifestation of God Himself. In Jesus, we see the very nature and character of God revealed. While God is invisible and cannot be seen with human eyes, Jesus makes God known to us.

“The firstborn of every creature”:The phrase “firstborn of every creature” does not imply that Jesus was created or born in a literal sense. Instead, it emphasizes His preeminence and supreme authority over all creation. The term “firstborn” in this context denotes priority, rank, and sovereignty. Jesus holds the highest position of authority over all creation, and everything that exists is subject to Him.

Theological significance:Colossians 1:15 emphasizes the deity of Jesus Christ. He is not merely a created being but the very representation of God Himself. This verse affirms that Jesus is God in human form, the second person of the Trinity. As the perfect image of God, Jesus reveals God’s character, nature, and attributes to humanity. He is the visible representation of the invisible God.

Furthermore, by calling Jesus the “firstborn of every creature,” Paul emphasizes Jesus’ sovereignty and authority over all creation. He holds a position of preeminence, not only in the spiritual realm but also over the entire universe. Jesus is the ruler and Lord over all things.

Application:

  • Colossians 1:15 reminds us of the centrality and importance of Jesus Christ. As believers, we are called to recognize His supreme authority and acknowledge His deity. We should strive to know Him more intimately and seek to imitate His character in our lives.

Moreover, this verse encourages us to rely on Jesus for our understanding of God. He is the perfect revelation of the Father, and through Him, we can know God personally. We should study the life, teachings, and example of Jesus in the Gospels to gain a deeper understanding of God’s nature and how we should live as His followers.

In summary, Colossians 1:15 exalts the person and nature of Jesus Christ as the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of every creature. It affirms His deity, His unique representation of God, and His supreme authority over all creation. This verse challenges us to deepen our understanding of Jesus and to live in submission to His lordship.
