1 Thessalonians 5:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:36
Listen to this article

“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”

Context:To better understand the verse, let’s first consider its context within the larger passage. The book of 1 Thessalonians was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Thessalonica. In this particular section (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11), Paul is addressing the return of the Lord Jesus Christ and the events that will accompany it.

Verse:1 Thessalonians 5:3 (KJV) states, “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”

The Day of the Lord:In the preceding verses, Paul discusses the “day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2), referring to the return of Jesus Christ and the final judgment. He emphasizes that the timing of this event will be unexpected, comparing it to a thief in the night. The people who are unprepared for Christ’s return will be caught off guard, facing sudden destruction.

False sense of security:The key message in verse 3 is that people will be declaring “Peace and safety” before the sudden destruction occurs. This suggests that there will be a prevailing false sense of security and peace in the world leading up to the Day of the Lord. People may be deceived into thinking that all is well, oblivious to the imminent judgment.

The analogy of childbirth:Paul uses the analogy of a woman in labor to illustrate the suddenness and inevitability of the destruction that will come. Just as birth pains intensify and become unavoidable for a woman in labor, so too will the destruction be for those who are unprepared. The imagery highlights the suddenness and inescapable nature of the judgment that will befall those who are spiritually unready.

Spiritual readiness:This verse serves as a reminder to believers to remain vigilant and spiritually prepared for the return of Christ. Paul goes on in the subsequent verses to encourage the Thessalonians to be watchful and sober, to put on faith and love, and to take comfort in the hope of salvation through Jesus Christ.

  • Overall, 1 Thessalonians 5:3 serves as a call to remain watchful, recognizing that the return of the Lord will come unexpectedly and that those who are unprepared will face sudden destruction. It encourages believers to live in anticipation of His coming and to faithfully fulfill their calling in Christ.
