1 Thessalonians 5:15
“See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.”
Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the first letter to the Thessalonians to encourage and instruct them in their faith. In chapter 5, Paul addresses various aspects of Christian living and gives them practical instructions on how to conduct themselves in different situations.
“See that none render evil for evil”:This verse begins with a command to the believers in Thessalonica. Paul urges them not to retaliate with evil when they are treated poorly or wronged by others. Instead of responding with revenge, they are called to choose a different path.
“Unto any man”:This instruction applies to all people, regardless of their actions or treatment towards the believers. It emphasizes the universal scope of the command. Christians are to demonstrate a Christlike attitude even when faced with mistreatment.
“But ever follow that which is good”:Instead of responding in kind, Paul instructs the Thessalonians to pursue what is good. Rather than retaliating with evil, they are to seek righteousness, kindness, and love. This echoes Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:38-48, where He calls His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them.
“Both among yourselves, and to all men”:The call to pursue what is good extends to both interactions within the Christian community and interactions with people outside of it. Believers are to treat one another with kindness, love, and respect. They are also called to extend the same virtues to everyone they encounter, irrespective of their faith or behaviour.
Overall, 1 Thessalonians 5:15 teaches believers to resist the temptation to respond to evil with evil. Instead, they are to actively pursue good, both among fellow believers and to everyone else. By doing so, Christians can be a shining example of Christ’s love and character in the world.
