1 Timothy 4:4

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

1 Timothy 4:4 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote this letter to his protégé Timothy, offering guidance for ministry in Ephesus. In the surrounding passage, Paul warns against false teachers who promote asceticism, forbidding marriage and commanding abstinence from certain foods (1 Timothy 4:3). Against that background, Paul declares that every creature of God is good and nothing is to be refused when received with thanksgiving.

Paul begins by affirming that every creature, or creation, of God is good. In this context, “every creature” refers to the food God has provided. Paul is countering the false teaching that abstaining from certain foods brings spiritual purity. He insists that God’s creation, including food, is inherently good.

Paul then adds that nothing should be refused, or rejected, as long as it is received with thanksgiving. The focus is on the heart’s attitude rather than dietary regulations. Believers are encouraged to receive all food with gratitude, recognizing it as a gift from God. Giving thanks acknowledges God’s goodness and provision, honoring Him as the source of every blessing.

This teaching echoes the creation account, where God saw everything He had made and declared it good. Paul’s instruction also connects to the gospel’s freedom from legalistic rules, pointing to the spiritual truth that comes through faith in Christ rather than external regulations. The condition “if it be received with thanksgiving” shows that gratitude is the proper response to God’s gifts.

  • Receive daily provisions with a thankful heart, recognizing them as gifts from a good Creator.

  • Guard against adopting man-made rules that add restrictions where God has given freedom.

  • Let gratitude shape your attitude toward every area of life, not just mealtimes.

Paul’s words free believers from the burden of human regulations and turn their attention to God’s goodness. A thankful heart transforms ordinary meals into acts of worship. This verse invites each believer to trust that what God provides is good and to receive it with joy, knowing that every good gift comes from Him.
