1 Timothy 4:9

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

1 Timothy 4:9 (KJV)

Paul writes to Timothy to encourage steadfastness in godliness amid false teaching. In the surrounding verses (1 Timothy 4:6-10), he contrasts bodily exercise, which profits little, with godliness, which is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. Verse 9 affirms that this statement about godliness is faithful and worthy of full acceptance.

The phrase “This is a faithful saying” indicates that what follows is an important and trustworthy statement. Paul often used this phrase to introduce key teachings or principles. The word “acceptation” means acceptance or approval. In this context, it suggests that what follows is worthy of being received and embraced by believers.

This verse echoes the similar “faithful saying” in 1 Timothy 1:15, which states that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, showing that such sayings summarize the gospel and its implications. The verse calls believers to wholeheartedly embrace the truth of godliness as the path of blessing, both now and in the future, and to live accordingly.

Consider how you can apply the verse in your daily life: Embrace the truths of God’s Word with conviction and trust. Seek to discern and accept teachings that align with Scripture, avoiding false doctrines. Share the faithful sayings and teachings of God’s Word with others, encouraging them to accept and live by them.

Meditate on the significance of the verse in your life as a Christian. Consider the importance of discerning and valuing faithful sayings and teachings in the Bible, the need to embrace and accept God’s Word with a heart of faith and obedience, and the value of recognizing and acknowledging the truth and reliability of God’s promises.
