2 Timothy 3:1

Listen to this article

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”

Context:The book of 2 Timothy is one of the pastoral letters written by the apostle Paul to his disciple Timothy. Paul wrote this letter from prison, during his second imprisonment in Rome, shortly before his martyrdom. In this letter, Paul provides instructions and encouragement to Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus. The passage in question, 2 Timothy 3:1, serves as a warning about the conditions that will prevail in the last days.

The Meaning of “This know also”:Paul is emphasising that what he is about to share is important and Timothy needs to be aware of it. It implies that Paul has already communicated certain truths to Timothy, and he now wants to add to his understanding.

“In the last days”:The phrase “last days” refers to the period of time between the first and second coming of Christ. It is a significant period characterised by various events leading up to the consummation of God’s plan for the world.

“Perilous times shall come”:Paul uses the phrase “perilous times” to describe the nature of the last days. It signifies difficult, grievous, or dangerous times. The Greek word for “perilous” is “chalepos,” which implies fierce, hard to bear, or savage. Paul is alerting Timothy to the fact that challenging and treacherous times will arise.

Understanding the Context:To fully grasp the significance of this verse, it is essential to consider the context of the surrounding verses. In the subsequent verses (2 Timothy 3:2-9), Paul provides a detailed description of the characteristics of people during these perilous times. He highlights their selfishness, love of money, lack of self‑control, pride, and rejection of godly authority. Paul wants Timothy to be aware of these traits so that he can guard against them and effectively lead the church.

Application for Today:While the warning in 2 Timothy 3:1 specifically pertains to the last days, we can still draw relevant lessons from it for our lives today. It serves as a reminder that we live in a fallen world, where sin and its effects are prevalent. As Christians, we should not be surprised when we encounter challenging times, but rather be prepared to face them with faith and perseverance.

Cultivating Faith and Discernment:In response to the warning in this verse, we should focus on deepening our faith, seeking wisdom from God, and cultivating discernment. By staying grounded in God’s Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, we can navigate through difficult times with spiritual maturity and integrity.

Proclaiming the Gospel:In the midst of challenging times, it is crucial for us as believers to remain steadfast in our commitment to sharing the gospel. The world needs the hope and truth of Jesus Christ more than ever. By boldly proclaiming the good news, we can counteract the negative influences of the perilous times and bring light and transformation to those around us.

Remember, this verse serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and faithful, even when the world around us seems dark and challenging. Through reliance on God’s strength, we can overcome and fulfil our purpose as ambassadors of Christ in a fallen world.
