2 Timothy 3:8

Listen to this article

“Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.”

Context:Before we focus on the verse itself, it’s important to understand the broader context of 2 Timothy. This epistle, written by the Apostle Paul, is addressed to Timothy, his young disciple and fellow minister of the Gospel. Paul wrote this letter while he was imprisoned, near the end of his life, to encourage and instruct Timothy in his ministry.

Jannes and Jambres:In this verse, Paul refers to Jannes and Jambres, who were not mentioned by name in the Old Testament but are traditionally believed to be the names of two Egyptian magicians or sorcerers who opposed Moses during the time of the Exodus (Exodus 7:8-12). Their confrontation with Moses involved a series of miracles and supernatural acts performed through the power of God.

Comparison to Jannes and Jambres:Paul draws a parallel between the opposition faced by Moses from Jannes and Jambres and the resistance Timothy would encounter in his ministry. The phrase “so do these also resist the truth” refers to certain individuals who oppose the truth of the Gospel. It implies that, just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, these people would oppose Timothy and the message of Christ.

Men of corrupt minds:Paul describes the individuals who resist the truth as having “corrupt minds.” This indicates that their thinking is twisted or morally corrupt, leading them to reject the Gospel and distort the teachings of Christ.

Reprobate concerning the faith:The phrase “reprobate concerning the faith” suggests that these individuals have been rejected or disqualified when it comes to matters of faith. They lack genuine belief and have become spiritually corrupt. Their resistance to the truth reveals their unbelief and refusal to accept the Gospel.

  • Opposition to the truth is not a new phenomenon. Just as Moses faced resistance from Jannes and Jambres, believers should expect opposition and resistance when proclaiming the Gospel.
  • The presence of corrupt minds can hinder the acceptance of the truth. It is important to be aware of those who distort the teachings of Christ and promote false doctrines.
  • Genuine faith in Christ is crucial. Those who resist the truth reveal their lack of genuine belief, and their spiritual corruption disqualifies them from the faith.

Overall, 2 Timothy 3:8 reminds believers to be vigilant in their faith, expecting opposition and remaining steadfast in the face of false teachings and those who resist the truth.
