Listen to this article

“But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;”

Context:Before delving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of the passage. The book of Titus is one of the pastoral epistles written by the apostle Paul to his co‑worker and fellow minister, Titus. In this letter, Paul provides instructions on how to appoint qualified elders and overseers in the churches on the island of Crete.

Lover of Hospitality:The phrase “a lover of hospitality” highlights the importance of being welcoming and generous to others. Hospitality involves providing a warm and inviting environment to strangers, guests, and fellow believers. It includes acts of kindness, showing love, and meeting the needs of others.

Lover of Good Men:A “lover of good men” emphasizes the need for Christians to associate and build relationships with those who exhibit godly character. It encourages believers to seek companionship and fellowship with individuals who live according to God’s standards and pursue righteousness.

Sober:The term “sober” refers to being self‑controlled and clear‑minded. It signifies having a disciplined and balanced approach to life, avoiding excesses or indulgence. Christians are called to be sober‑minded, keeping their minds focused on the things of God and avoiding distractions that could hinder their spiritual growth.

Just:To be “just” means to be fair and righteous in all dealings, showing impartiality and upholding justice. As believers, we are called to live in accordance with God’s moral standards, treating others equitably and standing up for what is right.

Holy:The word “holy” points to the importance of living a life that is set apart for God’s purposes. Believers are called to be holy because God is holy. This involves pursuing personal holiness, striving to conform to the character of Christ and living in obedience to God’s commandments.

Temperate:The term “temperate” implies self‑control and moderation in all aspects of life. It involves restraining one’s passions, desires, and appetites. Christians are called to exercise self‑discipline and avoid excesses in order to maintain a balanced and godly lifestyle.
