Titus 2:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.”

Context:The book of Titus is a pastoral epistle written by the apostle Paul to Titus, who was his companion and a fellow worker in the ministry. The purpose of this letter was to provide instructions to Titus for appointing and overseeing church leaders, as well as to guide the believers in their conduct and behavior.

Understanding the verse:

  • “Not purloining”:The word “purloining” means stealing or embezzling. Here, Paul instructs believers not to engage in dishonest or deceitful practices, especially in their dealings with others.
  • “Shewing all good fidelity”:This phrase means displaying faithfulness, trustworthiness, and integrity in all aspects of life.
  • “That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things”:The believers are called to live in a manner that reflects and honors the teachings of God. Their behavior should be consistent with the principles of the gospel, so that their actions bring glory to God and attract others to the message of salvation.

Key themes and lessons:

  • Integrity and honesty:The verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining honesty and integrity in all areas of life. Believers are called to be trustworthy and faithful, avoiding any form of dishonesty or fraudulent behavior.
  • Reflecting God’s character:By living according to God’s teachings, believers are not only representing themselves but also reflecting the character of God to the world. Their conduct should serve as a testimony to God’s grace, love, and redemption.
  • Impact on others:The verse highlights the significance of the believers’ conduct in influencing others. When they live with integrity and fidelity, they adorn the doctrine of God and make it attractive to those around them, drawing others towards the truth.

Application:

  • Personal integrity:As believers, we should examine our own lives and ensure that we are conducting ourselves with honesty and integrity in all areas. This includes our relationships, work, finances, and interactions with others.
  • Being a witness:Our behavior has the power to either attract or repel others from the message of the gospel. By living in a way that reflects the teachings of Christ, we can be effective witnesses and draw others closer to God.
  • Reflecting God’s grace:Our actions should reflect the grace and love that we have received from God. As we display fidelity and integrity, we demonstrate the transformative power of God’s Word and inspire others to seek Him.

Remember that the principles from this verse are applicable beyond the immediate context of the time it was written. They continue to guide believers today in living a life that honours God and impacts those around them.
