Hebrews 2:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were facing persecution and considering turning away from their faith in Christ. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ over all other figures and institutions in Judaism. In Hebrews 2, the author highlights the incarnation of Christ and His role as the perfect Savior.

The purpose of the verse:The verse begins by acknowledging that it was fitting for God, through whom and for whom all things exist, to bring many sons to glory. The purpose of this action was to perfect the captain of their salvation (referring to Jesus Christ) through sufferings. The verse emphasizes Jesus’ role as the pioneer or leader in the salvation of humanity.

God’s plan of salvation:The verse reveals God’s plan of salvation, which involves bringing many sons and daughters into glory. God’s desire is to reconcile fallen humanity to Himself and bring them into a state of eternal glory. This plan of salvation is fulfilled through Jesus Christ, who is the captain or leader in this redemptive work.

The perfection of Jesus through sufferings:The verse emphasizes that Jesus, the captain of our salvation, was made perfect through sufferings. This does not mean that Jesus lacked perfection before suffering, but rather that through His suffering, He achieved the completeness and fullness of His redemptive work. Jesus’ sufferings on the cross were necessary for the accomplishment of salvation. Through His sacrificial death, Jesus fully accomplished God’s plan of redemption and became the perfect Savior.

Application:This verse reminds us of the great love and purpose of God in sending Jesus Christ to suffer for our sins. It encourages believers to persevere in their faith, even in the midst of trials and sufferings, knowing that Jesus, the pioneer of our salvation, has already triumphed over sin and death. We can find comfort and strength in the fact that Jesus, who suffered on our behalf, understands our struggles and is able to help us in our times of need (Hebrews 2:18).

In conclusion, Hebrews 2:10 emphasises the purpose of God in bringing many sons to glory and perfecting the captain of their salvation, Jesus Christ, through sufferings. It reveals God’s plan of redemption and encourages believers to remain steadfast in their faith, knowing that Jesus has already accomplished our salvation through His sacrificial death.
