Wherefore when hee commeth into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared mee: Hebrews 10:5 (KJV)

Context: The book of Hebrews is an epistle written to Jewish Christians, emphasizing the superiority of Christ and the new covenant established through Him. The author highlights how Jesus fulfilled and surpassed the Old Testament sacrificial system through His perfect sacrifice.

Historical Background: In this verse the author of Hebrews quotes from Psalm 40:6‑8, which originally expresses King David’s devotion and desire to do God’s will. In Hebrews the passage is interpreted messianically as pointing to Jesus, indicating His fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy.

The Incarnation of Christ: The verse begins by acknowledging the coming of Jesus into the world and highlights the divine purpose behind His entrance into human history. Jesus willingly left the glory of heaven and took on a human body to fulfil God’s plan of salvation.

Rejection of Sacrifices and Offerings: The verse states, “Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not.” It emphasizes that the numerous animal sacrifices prescribed by the Mosaic Law were not ultimately what God desired. The blood of bulls and goats could not fully atone for sin or bring about true righteousness.

Preparation of a Body: The verse continues, “but a body hast thou prepared me.” Jesus, as the Son of God, was given a human body through the miracle of the Incarnation. This prepared body was necessary for Him to fulfil His mission as the perfect sacrifice for sin. He took on human nature so that He could represent humanity and offer Himself as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

The Superiority of Christ’s Sacrifice: The contrast between the ineffectiveness of animal sacrifices and the ultimate sacrifice of Christ is a key theme in Hebrews. The verse implies that Jesus’ sacrifice is superior to all previous sacrifices because it is perfect, complete, and capable of fully reconciling humanity with God.

Hebrews 10:5 reminds us of the immense love and humility of Jesus Christ. He willingly left the glories of heaven and took on human form, becoming the perfect sacrifice for our sins. As we reflect on this verse, we should be grateful for the gift of salvation through Christ and seek to live in obedience to God’s will, just as Jesus did.

Overall, Hebrews 10:5 underscores the uniqueness and superiority of Christ’s sacrifice, highlighting the significance of the Incarnation and His willingness to fulfil God’s redemptive plan.
