Hebrews 13:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:27

“Let brotherly love continue.”

Context:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish believers who were facing persecution and the temptation to turn away from their faith in Jesus Christ. The author emphasizes the superiority of Christ and encourages believers to persevere in their faith.

Love as a Commandment:The verse begins with the phrase “Let brotherly love continue.” This highlights the importance of love among believers. Love is not merely a feeling or emotion but a commandment from God. Jesus Himself emphasized the commandment of love, saying, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).

Brotherly Love:The phrase “brotherly love” in this verse refers to the love that believers are to have for one another as members of the family of God. It is a love that extends beyond mere acquaintanceship or friendship, reflecting the deep bond and unity that exists among those who belong to Christ. As Christians, we are called to treat one another as brothers and sisters, showing love, compassion, and care.

Continual Love:The verse encourages believers to let brotherly love continue. This suggests that love should not be a temporary or sporadic expression but a continuous and ongoing attitude in the life of a Christian. Our love for fellow believers should be unwavering, persevering through all circumstances, challenges, and disagreements. It should not be dependent on how others treat us but rooted in the love of Christ and His example.

Practical Applications:Brotherly love can be demonstrated through various actions, such as:

  • Showing kindness and compassion: We can actively seek opportunities to be kind and compassionate towards our brothers and sisters in Christ, helping and supporting them in their needs.
  • Forgiving one another: Love involves forgiveness and reconciliation. We should be willing to forgive others just as God has forgiven us.
  • Bearing one another’s burdens: We can offer our support, encouragement, and prayers for those who are going through difficult times.
  • Building up and encouraging one another: We should use our words to uplift and edify fellow believers, speaking words of encouragement and truth.
  • Maintaining unity: Love fosters unity within the body of Christ. We should strive to maintain peace and harmony, resolving conflicts in a spirit of love.

The Motivation for Love:Ultimately, our ability to love one another comes from the love of God poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). As we grow in our relationship with God, His love transforms us, enabling us to love others genuinely and selflessly.

In conclusion, Hebrews 13:1 reminds us of the commandment to let brotherly love continue. This love is not based on feelings alone but is a deliberate choice and action. As believers, we are called to love one another unconditionally and continuously, just as Christ loves us. Let us strive to demonstrate brotherly love in practical ways, reflecting the character of Christ and the unity of His body, the Church.
