James 5:16

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Context

The book of James is a letter written by James, the brother of Jesus, to encourage and exhort the early Christian community. In this verse, James focuses on the power of confession and prayer within the Christian community. The immediate context includes the preceding verses about prayer for the sick, and the following verse gives the example of Elijah, a man subject to like passions, who prayed earnestly.

Meaning

James emphasises the importance of confessing our faults or sins to one another. The Greek text uses ἐξομολογεῖσθε for confession and ἁμαρτίας for sins. The confession in view is understood as sins committed against one another, which should be acknowledged with repentance, in order to mutual forgiveness and reconciliation. This is necessary at all times, and especially on beds of affliction and when death and eternity seem near. The verse does not support auricular confession to a priest. Confession brings about accountability, humility, and healing. It promotes an environment of openness and honesty, fostering spiritual growth and unity among believers.

James encourages believers to pray for one another. Prayer is a powerful tool in the Christian life. By interceding for each other, we demonstrate love, care, and support for fellow believers. Through prayer, we can bring our needs, struggles, and burdens before God, seeking His intervention and guidance.

James mentions that through the confession of faults and prayer, healing can be obtained. This healing can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. It encompasses restoration, renewal, and reconciliation. It is important to note that healing is ultimately dependent on God’s will, and it may not always occur in the way or timing we expect.

James emphasises that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Translations render this as intense prayer, the prayer of a godly person being powerful and making things happen, and the continual prayer of a just man availing much. This implies that our prayers should be sincere, passionate, and aligned with God’s will. A righteous person seeks to live in obedience to God and maintain a close relationship with Him. Such prayers have a significant impact and can produce remarkable results.

Believers are called to practice mutual confession and intercessory prayer as regular expressions of community life. This creates an environment where healing and reconciliation can take place, and where the prayers of the righteous are offered fervently and effectively.
