Peter describes believers as a royal priesthood. In the Old Testament, priests were set apart to represent the people before God and to offer sacrifices on their behalf. As believers, we now have direct access to God through Jesus Christ, and we are called to offer spiritual sacrifices to God. Holy Nation:

The purpose of being a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people is to proclaim the praises of God. The word translated “praises” can also be rendered “excellencies,” pointing to God’s virtues, perfections, and mighty acts. We are called to testify to the goodness, mercy, and salvation of our God.
