1 Peter 5:14

Listen to this article

“Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.”

Context:The Apostle Peter wrote this letter to encourage and strengthen the believers who were going through trials and persecution. In the preceding verses, Peter provides instructions to the elders and the younger members of the church, emphasising humility, submission, and trust in God. In this final verse, he encourages the believers to greet one another with a kiss of charity and extends his blessings of peace to all in Christ Jesus.

Greeting with a Kiss of Charity:In ancient Eastern cultures, it was customary to greet one another with a kiss on the cheek as a sign of love, respect, and fellowship. The “kiss of charity” mentioned here represents the warm and affectionate greeting believers should exchange. It symbolises the unity, love, and close bond shared among the members of the Christian community.

Love and Unity:The “kiss of charity” not only signifies an outward expression of love but also points to the deeper meaning of unity and fellowship within the body of Christ. It reminds us of the importance of genuine affection and compassion for one another as members of God’s family. This expression of love helps to build strong relationships, fosters a sense of belonging, and promotes unity in the church.

Peace in Christ:Peter concludes the verse with a blessing of peace to all who are in Christ Jesus. This peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a deep sense of tranquility, harmony, and well‑being that comes from a relationship with Jesus. It encompasses both inner peace and peace among believers. As followers of Christ, we are called to pursue and promote peace in all our relationships, seeking to resolve conflicts and live in harmony with one another.

Application:

Genuine Love:Let us greet one another with sincere love and affection, showing kindness, and fostering a sense of unity and community within the church. Let our actions reflect the love of Christ.

Promoting Peace:As followers of Jesus, let us strive to promote peace in our relationships and interactions with others. Seek reconciliation and unity, and be peacemakers in our families, churches, and communities.

Blessing of Peace:Remember that in Christ, we have access to His peace that surpasses all understanding. Allow His peace to guard your hearts and minds, especially during challenging times.
