3 John 1:2

Listen to this article

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on 3 John 1:2 in the King James Version:

  • Context:Before diving into the verse itself, let’s understand the context of the book of 3 John. It is a short letter written by the apostle John, addressed to a man named Gaius. In this letter, John commends Gaius for his faithfulness and hospitality towards fellow believers. He also warns against a man named Diotrephes who was causing trouble in the church. In verse 2, John expresses his desire for Gaius’ well‑being.
  • God’s Desire for Our Prosperity:The verse begins with the phrase “Beloved, I wish above all things.” This emphasizes the genuine care and concern John has for Gaius and his spiritual growth. It shows that John wants the best for Gaius, just as God desires the best for His children. This verse reveals that God desires our prosperity, which encompasses various aspects of our lives.
  • Prosperity:The term “prosper” used in this verse refers not only to material wealth but also to overall well‑being and success in every area of life. It includes spiritual, physical, emotional, and relational aspects. However, it is important to note that prosperity in the Bible is not a guarantee of unending riches but rather the provision of our needs and sufficiency to fulfill God’s purposes in our lives.
  • Health:John expresses his desire for Gaius’ health. Physical health is a valuable aspect of our lives, and God cares about our well‑being. While illness and suffering are part of the human experience in a fallen world, we can seek God’s healing and restoration, trusting in His sovereignty and wisdom.
  • Spiritual Prosperity:John mentions that he desires Gaius’ prosperity to be in alignment with the prosperity of his soul. This highlights the significance of spiritual growth and the condition of one’s soul. Our spiritual prosperity involves deepening our relationship with God, growing in faith, understanding His Word, and becoming more Christlike in character.
  • Balance and Alignment:The verse suggests that there is a connection between spiritual and overall prosperity. A prosperous soul, thriving in a relationship with God, can positively impact other areas of our lives. When we prioritise spiritual growth, seeking God’s will and aligning our lives with His Word, it can lead to well‑being in various dimensions.
