3 John 1:7

Listen to this article

“Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.”

Context:The book of 3 John is a short letter written by the Apostle John to a man named Gaius, commending him for his hospitality and encouraging him to continue supporting fellow believers who were traveling and spreading the Gospel. In verse 7, John refers to some messengers who went forth for the sake of Christ’s name, not accepting any support from the Gentiles.

Going forth for His name’s sake:The messengers mentioned in this verse were likely itinerant preachers or missionaries who traveled from place to place, sharing the message of Jesus Christ. They went forth with the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel, making disciples, and advancing God’s kingdom. Their primary motivation was the glory and honour of Jesus’ name.

Taking nothing of the Gentiles:This phrase indicates that the messengers did not rely on financial support or material provisions from the Gentiles, referring to non‑believers or people outside the Christian community. Instead, they depended on the hospitality and support of fellow believers. This approach may have been a strategic choice to avoid any potential compromise in their message or the appearance of seeking personal gain.

Lessons for believers:

Selfless service:The messengers’ refusal to take anything from the Gentiles demonstrates their selflessness and dedication to the cause of Christ. As believers, we are called to serve others without selfish motives, seeking to honour God’s name rather than seeking personal gain or recognition.

Dependence on God:By relying on fellow believers for support, these messengers demonstrated their trust in God’s provision. They understood that God would provide for their needs through the generosity of His people. This reminds us to trust in God’s faithfulness and provision as we engage in His work.

Wise discernment:The decision of the messengers not to accept support from the Gentiles also highlights the importance of discernment. They were cautious to avoid compromising their mission or causing stumbling blocks for others. As believers, we need to exercise discernment in our interactions and decisions, considering how they might impact our witness for Christ.

Application:In our own lives, we can learn from this verse by examining our motives for serving others and sharing the Gospel. We should seek to honour God’s name in all that we do, putting the interests of His kingdom above our own desires. Additionally, we can trust in God’s provision and seek wisdom in our interactions, ensuring that our actions align with the message of Christ and do not hinder others’ understanding of the Gospel. Remember to read the surrounding verses and the entire book of 3 John for a deeper understanding of the context and message conveyed by the Apostle John.
