Revelation 3:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:22
Listen to this article

“Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is addressing the church in Sardis, one of the seven churches mentioned in the book of Revelation. Each of these churches represents a specific period in church history and carries a message for both the local congregation at the time and a broader spiritual message for believers throughout the ages.

Jesus urges the church in Sardis to be watchful and alert. It implies the need for spiritual wakefulness and attentiveness. Believers are called to be aware of the spiritual battle around them, to guard against complacency, and to remain diligent in their faith.

The church in Sardis is instructed to focus on strengthening the things which remain. This suggests that while the church may have had some faithful members, it was in a state of spiritual decline. Jesus encourages them to invest their efforts in revitalizing their faith, renewing their commitment to God, and rebuilding their spiritual foundation.

The phrase ready to die refers to the remnants of spiritual vitality that were on the verge of extinction. It implies that the church was in danger of losing its fervor, zeal, and effectiveness in carrying out God’s work. Jesus calls for immediate action to prevent this spiritual death.

Jesus acknowledges that the church in Sardis had works not perfect before God. This indicates that while they may have been involved in various activities, their works lacked sincerity, genuineness, and full devotion to God. Jesus desires wholehearted commitment and genuine faithfulness from His followers.

The message of Revelation 3:2 to the church in Sardis serves as a reminder to believers in all ages. It warns against spiritual complacency and emphasizes the importance of constant vigilance, strengthening one’s faith, and pursuing a genuine relationship with God. It encourages believers to evaluate the sincerity and authenticity of their works, ensuring that they are in alignment with God’s standards and pleasing to Him.
