Revelation 9:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:18
Listen to this article

“Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and prophetic book written by the apostle John. It contains a series of visions and messages concerning the end times and the final judgment. In this particular verse, John describes a period of great tribulation when God pours out His judgments upon the earth.

Unrepentant behaviour:The verse states that despite the judgments and calamities befalling the earth, people did not repent of their sins. It highlights four specific sins mentioned: murders, sorceries, fornication, and thefts.

Murders:This refers to the act of unlawfully taking someone’s life. It indicates a disregard for the sanctity of human life and the commandment to not murder (Exodus 20:13). It is a grave sin that shows a lack of love, respect, and regard for others.

Sorceries:The Greek word used here is “pharmakeia,” which can be translated as “witchcraft” or “drug use.” It refers to the practice of occult arts, magic, or the use of mind-altering substances for spiritual or deceptive purposes. It is condemned in Scripture as it involves seeking supernatural power apart from God and can lead to spiritual bondage.

Fornication:This term encompasses various sexual sins, including sexual immorality, adultery, and sexual relations outside of marriage. It is a violation of God’s design for human sexuality and undermines the sanctity of marriage. The Bible consistently teaches that sexual relations are to be reserved for the context of a committed marital relationship (1 Corinthians 6:18; Hebrews 13:4).

Thefts:This refers to the act of stealing or taking something that does not belong to you without permission. It involves dishonesty, greed, and a lack of respect for the property and rights of others. The commandment “You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15) clearly condemns this behaviour.

Overall message:This verse portrays a society in the midst of great turmoil and suffering, yet they remain unrepentant in the face of God’s judgment. It underscores the hardness of their hearts and their refusal to turn from their sinful ways, even when faced with the consequences.

Application:As believers, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of repentance and turning away from sin. It is a call to examine our own lives and seek forgiveness from God when we fall short. It also emphasises the urgency of sharing the message of repentance and salvation with others, as we strive to lead them to Christ.

In conclusion, Revelation 9:21 describes a time of great tribulation when people refuse to repent of their sins, even in the face of God’s judgment. It serves as a reminder for believers to examine their own lives, seek forgiveness, and share the message of repentance and salvation with others.
